When Residential Members first start running with Back on my Feet, they feel a sense of community within the morning circle. Interacting with Residential and Non-Residential members several days during a weekly basis provides them with a strong and encouraging support system which allows them to succeed in their goals. Once they move out of the facilities it becomes more difficult for them to come out in to the circle to run whether that is due to distance or work schedule. In this fragile time of transition some members feel isolated from the BoMF family and are still in need of support and positive interaction.
In the BoMF Alumni Program we focus on what happens after the move. Not only how are members supported long-term and beyond their team, but when they seek independent housing and are re-employed. How do we seek to make sure healthy lifestyles remain? That's where you and the alumni support system come in.
What is the mission of this program?
To provide a continuum of the BoMF community beyond the time when a Residential Member exits their facility and begins living independently. This transition is a very delicate time for our members in continuing in the road to a successful recovery from chemical addictions, social disorders or long-standing illness.
In order to continue the positive gains achieved during participation with BoMF at a facility, a common link needs to be established with that member. One of the primary reasons for success in the BoMF program is the personal one-on-one connection that is achieved. The Alumni Program should be no different and driven by those same interactions.
Developing consistent expectations and goals for the Alumni Program are crucial for all involved in the process and providing that link will give members a tremendous tool to continue their healthy lifestyle choices. At BoMF, we are not here to "save" members, we are here to provide support, friendship and engagement as our members transition back into the workforce and independent living. We feel that personal connections and one-on-one relationships are critical in building upon the success of the team environment.
How can I help?
In each city we are looking for "Boosters", Non-Residential members who will be paired with a Residential Member prior to their moving out in order to maintain a close personal connection to the program. Initial interactions are facilitated by the BoMF Program Director, but subsequent interactions are handled by the Residential Alumni Member and Booster. Boosters and alumni members agree to meet or correspond for a minimum of 1 hour total per week (this can be by phone, getting together for coffee or going for a run - the key is spending the time, not specifically what the activity is). There is no financial commitment and money is never exchanged between Boosters and alumni.
Specifics of engagement, suggestions for meeting locations and activities will be covered in orientation. Prior to starting, each Booster will receive a manual of frequently asked questions and answers.
Who can be a Booster?
Potential Boosters need to have been running with a BoMF team for at least 4 months and preference is given to current or previous core-members and Team Leaders as experience with the BoMF program is important. BoMF staff will handle the pairing.
How can I learn more?
Orientations for the first round of Boosters will be starting in late 2012 in each city and then will take place every other month.
